Ten Principles
for Advocacy Success

1) Be yourself. There is no need to fake who you are.

2) It's ALL about relationships.

3) Change comes by building and expanding your base of support.

4) Stay on task and stay on message.

5) Don't be intimidated.

6) Never ever lie, and don't exaggerate, just stick to the facts.

7) Do what's necessary to keep yourself and others energized and connected.

8) If you don't follow up, you don't win.

9) Listen carefully; talk sparingly.

10) You must ask! If you don't request anything, nothing need be given to you.

Great Cancer Advocacy Organizations Have Great Information

There are many excellent nonprofit organizations that specialize in cancer advocacy and have up-to-the-minute information on critical legislation. More importantly, these organizations will help link you with other like-minded advocates. One thing always to keep in mind: An advocate for one kind of cancer should never talk ill about advocates for other types of cancer. We are all involved in one crucial, life-giving fight and we must do so together with one voice.
